7/21 Blog Response

What are your expectations for Bridge English Studies? What are your goals? If you could learn one thing from this class, what would it be?

What do you think our expectations are for you? What goals do you think we have for you? What questions to you have?

I'm expecting the Brige English studies to help me improve my english and get ready for my actual college classes.
I want to improve my writing skills, to where I'm more confident in my papers and other work. The expectations seem high but to push us and get us ready for the reall deal, which is awesome. I've never heard of any other college doing this kind of program.
No questions right now, but im sure I'll have a lot along the way.

In this English study I expect to leave with more than I came with as far as my writing, and discussing skills.

If I could learn one thing it would be every single device of literature and how they are used in creative writing.

I think your expectations are for me to be attentive, cooperative, and to be just as commited as you both are in helping myself.

As far as Goals I think that they would be for me to leave this class with the knowledge and skills that you both meant for to have.

My Bridge English Studies expectations are to learn how to communicate properly with my peers, and learn alternative ways of thought and expression through text.
One thing I could learn would be better sentencing structuring and speaking structer.
I believe your expectations are for us to understand literature and thought fluently without having to strain in order to communicate. I also believe you expect us to apply these ideas into our everyday lives, and build a stronger network in order for us to be successful.
The goals you have for us, I believe are to communicate effectivley before entering the Fall semester, and better understand communications.
My main question at this point is how to learn how to get around the city without having to freak out about what street meets where, and so on.

From the english studies program I expect to learn and to grow. My goals that I want to achieve from this program is the become interested in reading and be able to write work that is interesting to read. That's always been a problem for me is to write material thats interesting. I know if there was one thing I could get from this english class it would be to walk away with something I wrote that somebody actually enjoyed reading.
I feel as though every teacher here has great expectations for each student. They want us to show them that we're ready for the next level and prepaired to take on anything they give us. These teachers want us to better ourselves and to prove to ourselves that we are ready and that's really refreshing.

I expect this course to pull out the writer in me. I want to become the best that i can be. This class/ program will make me a well rounded individual. I think that more schools should offer programs like this. Bridge helps encourage students like myself. The journey will not be easy but I'm sure it will be worth while.

It's interesting to see how many of you want to attain and possess "knowledge." One thing that is frustrating about college--and learning in general--is how often you realize that when you learn/"master" one thing, there is another thing you find you know nothing about. In research, this will happen a lot.

Regarding being a better writer--most of you seem to WANT to try new techniques and understand the process of writing. If that is an interest, we can use some of the post-lecture time to have more creative writing prompts that attempt different types of writing. You can ask for that or let me know if you are interested. I can always give you "optional" prompts too to take home and work on at your own time/pace.

It is important to remember, when you are writing more "essay" rooted texts in class, that the word essay stems from the French word "to try." That is all we are asking you to do. Our expectations are high because we have the confidence that your "try" has the potential to develop into something wonderful.

Communication is a part of writing and that means that clarity and organization are crucial. Also, empathy and writing with a voice that acknowledges the reader and respects the "context" of the world in which we are writing (our politics, our contemporaries, and everything else happening outside of the act of writing). It is interesting to see it mentioned that we want you to not have to "strain" in discussion. I always strain in discussion because I want, so badly, to say exactly what I am thinking. There are so many different "languages" out there--the way we speak to our friends, our family, and our "academic" speak sometimes seem at odds. Try to find a way to translate what you are thinking, but this will, of course, be a difficult task sometimes.

These are good first responses to the prompt. I encourage you to keep asking yourself what your goals are and consider how you can use your resources to better meet those goals. If you are in a class where you don't feel challenged, ask a challenging question and see if you can find and create a conversation. If you are in a class where you feel overwhelmed, talk to your teacher and peers.

For later posts, I'll have individual responses and writing pattern recognition.

best,
Kristen
