7/28 Blog Question 3

In Our America, the kids in the book don't see the government or cops as a helping hand. They live in the projects and see crime everyday. If you were to be in their shoes how would you view the government? How would you see cops? Would you be interested at all in what the government does?

I've been through the same mindframe growing up in a rough place so I would have to say I'd view it partially like them. When you are in that position you feel like no one gives a damn, which unforchanetly is pretty much true. When you're stuck in a ghetto or any place like that, it almost never changes. I even went back to where I grew up and it's just the same thing, just another day, month, then eventually year. It's as if these places are frozen in time because no one cares when they are not in that position. It's hard to even respect the government when it is so fractured.

Considering the fact that I already dont like the government or cops im pretty sure I would absolutely hate them. I always feel like the cops in my town are always out to get us for the littlest things. Cops are suposed to protect us. In my town they will do whatever they can to bust a underage party or arrest a kid for having a little bit of pot in their car. I think they should have better things to worry about. If I was living in the projects I think i would feel hopeless. I would feel like the cops were always after me and there is no way for me to get any help.

I think I would see the cops as being an interfeirence, because it would seem like they weren't a "helping hand". I wouldn't really know what else to say about how i'd feel.

I would view the government on not doing their job. They say that they do their best to stop the violence and get young adults to turn their life around by avoiding violence, it's all about money to me. They don't try hard enough. They try to show that they care by having a way to get rebate checks and putting away people that cause these wars and etc. It's all a show. I really don't like cops because most of them do devious things, they mistreat people for no reason just cuz they are the law. Some of them are with race or against. Most cops cause a act with blacks. It's not right and it's wrong. I'm not interested in most of the time of what the government does and want.

If I was in the same shoes as LeAlan and Lloyd,My view on the government would be even more hostile than it is now. For the simple fact that for them to be as "concerned" and protecting as they put off to be. It's nothing but bullshit. Their subjected to the same things everyday, and the government does nothing. Well actually I take that back, they do send crooked ass cops to do nothing but further depress the people, and extort, and lock up innocent people.

Josh,

What about letter writing and petitioning the government? If we don't actively seek change, will we have change? How can this condition seem less desperate?

Colton,

Do you think legalization has benefited other countries? Try to get some facts on this for us. Look at Canada and Europe.

Samantha,

To develop empathy, try to put yourself in their situation: You are a young kid and you don't know who to depend on...what does that feel like?

Tiara,

Can you clarify what it means to be "with race?" Do you think cops are racists? Do you think our country talks openly about race relations and the government? How have recent political events contributed to this? Do you know what it means to racially monitor? Have you seen/heard/read about this happening?

Derrick,

Can you show us some examples from the book?

I do beleive that legalization has helped other countrys. I was watching a special on 60 minutes about this exact thing. A reporter went to amsterdamn and asked their mayor if their drug problem was bad and effecting their country. The mayor laughed and said half of our drug users are tourists from your country. He explained that since it is legal the people respect it more. It is not abused and they have almost no crime rate. I think that if weed and maybe even cocaine were legal it would stop a ton of violence. Many murders and robberys are drug related. Also I see too many good kids getting in trouble for something stupid. For example I was driving with a girl from my school who was 2nd in state for tennis. We were pulled over and she had a pipe and about $10 worth of pot on her. The cop charged her and arrested her and it screwed up her tennis career. That is something that just doesnt make sense to me. You never hear about someone getting in a accident for driving stoned or beating their kids because they were too high. Never do you hear of a girl being raped because she was stoned. I think liqour is the real problem
