.Judging a book by its cover.

What do you think about the saying, "Never judge a book by its cover"? Do you feel that there are advantages and disadvantages to this? Do you think that the cover always has to relate to the story, or maybe be the answer to one of your questions that you have throughout the whole story?

I feel there are advantages to "not judging a book by it's cover" because it allows us to do more than just scratch the surface of others personalities. There's only so much you can learn about someone by observing them. A disadvantage would be you could always find someone you think is a good friend who may end up messing your life up, and not necessarily it being their fault, but maybe they played a role in it.
The cover I found usually doesn't have anything to do with the story, but it just tells it's own. The cover tends to be a story which you have to read in too, and to understand it will open your mind to actually wanting to read the book.

I would add to that...how did each of you judge the book you're reading by its cover? What does the cover tell you about the text, now that you've read some of the book?

I hear the saying "Never judge a book by its cover" a lot. I am someone who usualy does this. If the cover is not interesting i ususaly am not interested in it. Although I do not believe that if the cover of the book is boring the book will not be. I think you never know about a book until you read the first chapter. Just like you don't really know someone unless you hang out with them for at least a night. I think even though I often do it you should never judge a book by its cover.

I "judge a book by its cover" all the time. The saying can work for many diffent things. It's really hard not to.
But on the other hand whether its a person and they don't seem like someone you normally would be friends with you have to get to know them and their personalities. With a book it's the same thing it's not what it's wrapped in but the contents of it, you just have to take a chance.

To respond to Kate. The cover for Stranger Than Fiction is what looks like a mans feet and his then his body is covered by a sheet or curtain of some sort. Before reading the book it didn't really mean much to me. Now after starting reading the book I think that the cover means that someone is hiding himself/herself from the world, representing loneliness. There probably will be other meanings i will come up with further through the book.

I would like to think that I don't judge a book by it's cover but I do. it is the first thing that I see. It is that first impression that get. What color is the title on the cover? What is the picture? Is there anything on the cover at at all? What does mean? What does show? These are the questions ask myself, and from the answers to these questions, I formulate a judgment of the book. However, as quickly as I am to come up with this judgment, is as quickly as I am to dismiss it. Until I can find out what the book is talking about and what it is trying to convey, can I come up with a true judgment.

I guess I do the same with people too. By fist glance of a person I'm forming my judgment of them. If I get the opportunity to talk to them, then I can start to change and reform my initial judgment of that person.

Nick, nice job finding a relationship between judging a text and judging individuals. Why do you think we assess people by how they dress/look?

I've always been judgemental when looking at a book or person and judge how the story is going to be or how a person act. If the cover looks interesting most of the time you pick it up before even reading the back or opening to read the first page. A person that always looks mean doens't mean their not a nice person. The Last American Man for instance, I truly thought that this book was going to be boring. He looks funny just cuz he has all this hair but, It's quite interesting. By the cover of the book I understand why the cover refers to the book. The cover don't alway's have to relate to the story.

I think we judge people by the way they look because, thats how society taught us.
